Inspire® for Sleep Apnea
A Modern FDA-approved CPAP Alternative

If you’ve been diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea, chances are CPAP was the first treatment you were handed. And for many people, it works — when they can actually use it.
But if you’re among the patients who find it uncomfortable, disruptive, or simply impossible to sleep with, you’re not alone. And you’re not out of options.
Inspire therapy is an FDA-approved sleep apnea treatment that works inside your body. No mask, no hose, no machine on the nightstand. If CPAP hasn’t worked for you, it may be worth a closer look.
Why So Many People Struggle with CPAP
CPAP is effective, but only when it’s used consistently. That’s where many patients hit a wall. Common reasons people abandon CPAP include:
- Mask discomfort or skin irritation from nightly wear
- Claustrophobia or anxiety from wearing a mask during sleep
- Difficulty tolerating the air pressure, especially when exhaling
- Noise from the machine disrupting sleep or a partner’s
- Inconvenience while traveling
- Simply waking up without the mask and not remembering removing it
If any of this sounds familiar, it doesn’t mean you’ve failed your treatment. It means CPAP may not be the right fit, and there are alternatives worth exploring.
What Is Inspire and How Does It Work?

Inspire is a small implantable device that treats obstructive sleep apnea from the inside. Rather than forcing air through a mask, it works with your body’s natural breathing process.
Here’s the basic idea: obstructive sleep apnea occurs when the airway collapses or becomes blocked during sleep. Inspire therapy addresses this by delivering gentle stimulation to the hypoglossal nerve, the nerve that controls tongue and airway movement, keeping the airway open while you sleep.
Before bed, you simply click a small handheld remote to turn the device on. That’s it. No mask to fit, no machine to fill with water, no straps to adjust. When you wake up, you turn it off.
Inspire is FDA-approved for adults with moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea who haven’t had success with CPAP.
Inspire vs. CPAP: How Do They Compare?
CPAP
- Delivers continuous pressurized air through a mask worn over the nose and/or mouth
- Requires a bedside machine, hose, and mask every night
- Highly effective when used consistently, but compliance is a common challenge
- Best for patients who can tolerate wearing a mask during sleep
Inspire
- A small implant that stimulates the airway to stay open naturally during sleep
- No mask, hose, or bedside machine; activated with a handheld remote at bedtime
- Designed specifically for patients who have tried CPAP and couldn’t make it work
- Best for adults with moderate-to-severe OSA who meet candidacy criteria
Are You a Candidate for Inspire?
Inspire isn’t the right fit for everyone, but it may be a good option if you:
- Have been diagnosed with moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea
- Have tried CPAP and found it ineffective or intolerable
- Are an adult with a BMI within the range required for the procedure
- Do not have complete concentric collapse of the airway (determined through a sleep evaluation)
Inspire therapy is not designed for central sleep apnea, and it may not be appropriate for patients with certain anatomical considerations. The best way to find out if you qualify is to schedule an evaluation. A provider can review your sleep study results and help determine whether you’re a good fit.
What Does Inspire Cost and Does Insurance Cover It?
Cost is one of the most common questions patients have about Inspire, and it’s a fair one. It’s a surgical procedure, and the out-of-pocket picture varies.
The good news: Inspire therapy is covered by most major insurance plans and Medicare when specific clinical criteria are met, typically including a prior CPAP trial and documented diagnosis of moderate-to-severe OSA. For patients who qualify, out-of-pocket costs are often comparable to other covered surgical procedures.
Without insurance, the total cost varies depending on the facility and location, but typically includes the device, procedure, and follow-up care.

What Do Patients Actually Experience?

The Inspire implant procedure is typically performed as an outpatient surgery under general anesthesia. Most patients go home the same day and return to normal activities within a week or two.
During recovery, you may experience some temporary soreness or swelling at the incision sites. The device is usually activated a few weeks after surgery, and your care team will work with you to fine-tune the settings over time.
Clinical studies have shown meaningful reductions in sleep apnea events for patients who use Inspire consistently, and most patients report significant improvements in sleep quality and daytime energy.
It’s also worth addressing something that comes up in a lot of patient research: concerns about what can go wrong. Like any surgical procedure, Inspire carries risks, including infection, temporary discomfort, and in some cases the need for adjustments or revision. These complications are relatively uncommon, but they’re real, and any provider worth their salt will walk you through them honestly before you decide. Going in informed is always the right call.
